In 6th grade, students will continue to build from what they learned the previous year and expand that knowledge with new skills and problem solving strategies that they learn this year. We are getting them ready for Pre-Algebra.
Topics include:
Decimals- comparing and ordering, estimating, operations with decimals and order of operations
Patterns and Variables- we continue to introduce algebra concepts: variables and expressions, solving one step equations (adding, subtracting, multiplication, and dividing)
Number Theory and Fractions- Prime Factorization,Greatest Common Factor, Equivalent Fractions, Relationship between Fractions and Decimals, Operations with Fractions, Equations Using Fractions
Ratios, Proportions and Percentages- ratios, unit rates, scale drawings, finding percent of a number, estimating a percent, writing an equation
Data and Graphs- statistical analysis, different types of graphs, identifying misleading graphs and statistics
Geometry- angles, special pair of angles, classifying triangles, classifying polygons and line symmetry
Geometry and Measurements-metric units of length, mass, and capacity, perimeters and areas of rectangles, areas of parallelograms and triangles, circles and circumference, area of a circle, three dimentional figures and spatial reasoning, surface areas and volumes of prisms and cylinders
Integers- Operations with Integers, Graphing in the Coordinate Plane, Graphing
Exploring Probability
We finish the year with solving two step equations, inequalities, exploring square roots
How do We Teach this Course:
Direct Instruction with guided and independent practice, hands- on activities with STEM applications, use of Math IXL to meet each student's need individually and the Problem of the Day.
